In the Bialowieza forest is monitoring the numbers of butterflies winter moth

Workers of the protection forest of the National Park "Belovezhskaya Pushcha" monitor the number of butterfly to the winter moth forecasting of the pest population in 2018, according to the website of the national Park.

the Winter moth is one of the regulated types of insects in the national Park. The pest damages buds and leaves of more than 200 trees and shrubs deciduous species, of which most prefers oak, Apple, maple, willow and Linden.

Butterflies of the winter moth thrive in the autumn months, and often in December before the frost. In the twilight years there is an active moth males, the number of which is twice the number of females. Females are not able to fly — their wings are reduced, to lay their eggs, they rise from the forest floor to the top of the oak.

For a capture and registration of males in the woods, where grows an oak, set traps with pheromone "Vaben" for females on the trunk overlap the adhesive ring. Workers of forest protection every 10 days, keep records of the number of captured insects. Preliminary analysis showed that the mass destruction of the English oak winter moth in Belovezhskaya Pushcha is not expected.
